A visit to Juniper Green Primary School
15th March 2007

"On 15th March 2007, I visited Juniper Green Primary School with Irene Thomson and Tommy Tweedie.

Irene Thomson, Tom Tweedie and Irene Sharp seen at the coffee morning at St Margaret's Court on January 4th 2007

We were invited to answer questions posed by Primary 7 about our life in wartime. The children had prepared many varied questions including farming and the Women's Land Army, rationing, what food we ate, air raids and war work done by women. We told them that older children did berry picking and harvesting during the holidays.

They were interested to hear about evacuation and whether we ever thought we would lose the war and if we were afraid of Hitler!

School life was another interest, what punishment we got, leaving age and what games/leisure we had.

After the talk we were given a conducted tour of the school by two of the pupils which was very interesting, a fitting end to a very pleasant afternoon."

The Primary 7 youngsters prepared reports on the meeting and sent them to their visitors. Below is a typical example of one of the reports:

The War reminiscers (an extract) by Dayna Scully and Corrie Dundas Primary 7 Juniper Green Primary School

"On Thursday 15th March 2007 Irene Sharp, Irene Thomson and Tommy Tweedie were invited to Juniper Green Primary School to share their memories for the celebration of JG300!

The Primary seven pupils of Juniper Green Primary School made a semi-circle in the main hall around our guests to listen to their memories of their school life and other different subjects.

All of the visitors were about 12 when the war broke out. At school during the war you had to carry your gas mask ALL the time and sometimes you did lessons wearing them. There were not so many activities during the war either. Irene Thomson went to guides but it was cancelled or held in other people's houses. If there was an air raid late at night you did not go to school until much later next day. When there was an air raid there were shelters in the grounds of the school or you went into the bathrooms that had boarded up windows."
