A visit to Juniper Green Primary School
15th March 2007

A couple of the JG300 reminiscers were invited into Juniper Green Primary School to tell the pupils more of their stories. Bill Blair and Jean Craig went along to explain what life was like when they were young.

Jean Craig explains to the children of Juniper Green Primary 1 and 2 some memories of when she was a child

Jean Craig writes of her experiences at Juniper Green School "I was asked to give a little talk to the children of Primary 1 and 2 at the Juniper Green School. I was a bit daunted when I heard there were 50 children altogether but I needn't have worried as they were delightful and asked questions all the time. The subjects covered were sweets: I was in at the tail end of the war and there was only a small delivery once a week and all us school children formed a queue at breaktime at the local sweetshop! Then, we talked about lack of computers, bakerlight telephones with dials and telephone numbers that had the place name in the number i.e. Larkswood 2839 and early televisions when my friends and I thought the people on the screen could see us! An outside lavatory on the farm where I was evacuated with no flush!. The Walls icecream barrow cycled by the man with the bell. etc. It was very enjoyable and I came away thinking how confident and happy all those children were.

Thank you JG300 for giving me this chance of seeing inside the school.

Jean Craig"

Bill Blair tells his stories to fellow Juniper Green residents Irene Sharp and Cliff Beevers

After Jean and Bill had visited the school, Class P2A wrote:

"We would like to tell you about the Visit we had from Jean and Bill.

The visit was super duper because we did not know much about old Juniper Green at first but they told us about lots of different things. For example, we found out that Bill had two rooms in his house. Bill also told us that he only tasted a banana when he was 11 years old.

Jean told us that her favourite toy was like a drum or a wheel. You put water in the top. Jean had croquet in her back garden. Jean told us about her dad's shop which sold soap, oil and glue.

They both helped their mum to do the washing on a Monday."
