History Walk
10th May 2007
By Liz Beevers

34 individuals set off for a tour of the historical sites of Juniper Green

On May 10th thirty-four people explored the early history of the village (up to the 1850s) on foot.

On a cool evening with the threat of rain never far away the group made the circuit from the Church via Upper Spylaw Mill, along the Water of Leith to the railway bridge overlooking the Barley Mill at the foot of Veitch's then across the Lanark Road, down Juniper Avenue, into Bloomiehall Park and back to the old school.

Liz Beevers explains one of the details on the history walk on May 10th 2007

Liz Beevers talked about the early landowners, the developments of the mills, the importance of the road and the constancy of the river all with their contributions to the village's story. Members of the group chipped in with their own reminiscences and knowledge to make it "a collective knowledge" tour rather than a lecture.

Beside the history the group was reminded of the wealth of the wildlife on the river when a heron posed on the top of Mossy Mill's weir and a pair of ducks quacked their way up the river. Much of the information of this walk/talk can be found in the virtual tour on this website entitled "The Early History Walk". Bill Blair ended the evening with a vote of thanks for the leader as he handed over the now customary bottle of Juniper Green gin.
