Presentation of the JG300 Cup at Pentland Bridge Club
3rd April 2007
By John Mendum

As part of the ter-centennial celebrations of Juniper Green, Pentland Bridge Club decided to instigate a Juniper Green 300 years Cup, to be awarded annually to the winners of a Teams of Four Competition. The first competition for the cup took place on January 25th this year and was won by Jean Newport, Ann Blott, George Armstrong and George Graham.

In the photograph of the presentation are (from left to right) Jean Newport, Jim Perrett, George Armstrong, Enid Perrett, George Graham and Ann Blott. The Perretts were instrumental in setting up the bridge club over 40 years ago and the remaining 4 won the Teams of 4 Competition held on January 25th 2007.

In the search for a suitable trophy a silver Edwardian cup of restrained Art Nouveau design was purchased. Coincidentally, the assay mark (Sheffield) shows that it was produced in 1907. The cup was married with a turned wooden base made from seasoned Scottish elm by George Burgess in Inverness and a simple engraved silver plaque added by Alex Kirkwood & Son.

Enid and Jim Perrett, who were instrumental in founding the Pentland Bridge Club in 1966, presented the trophy to the winning quartet on May 31st at the 'end of season' party. Members of the Pentland Club take part in duplicate bridge on Thursday evenings at St Margaret's Hall in Juniper Green. For many years the club has run a team that competes in the Scottish Bridge Union Eastern District League.
