The School House at 28 Baberton Avenue, Juniper Green

A modern picture of the "wee" school house on Baberton Avenue, now a private dwelling

In 1874, the school Trustees made over the school to the School Board of Colinton (which had come about after the 1872 Education (Scotland) Act. The conditions stated that the present teacher, Miss Mary Stuart, continues in office and one could hold religious services there occasionally. Schooling wasn't free and fees at the Colinton Juniper Green Public School (Female) were from 2 pence to 3 pence per week (old money), according to age.

In 1894, it became the Juniper Green Infant and Industrial School with 69 infants (Primary 1 & 2) and 40 first standard (Primary 3) pupils who were taught by Miss Kennedy and her assistant Miss Marion Turner.

The school had 2 classrooms with galleried desks and seats at the street end and an open fire in each. The present garden was the playground and had a washhouse, coal-shed and play-shed.

In 1922, after the Male School along the road was rebuilt and enlarged, the building became redundant as a school and was turned into two houses. In about 1963 the building was converted into one house where the school janitor lived, until it was sold by Lothian Regional Council to become a private house in 1992. By this time it was quite well run down and was described as having potential as an attractive family home although it will require considerable refurbishment before this potential can be realised!
