Canal on Baberton Land

Union Canal

During the early 1800's the Union Canal was constructed across a section of Baberton land.  It was built as an uninterrupted contour canal, being connected to the Forth and Clyde Canal by a flight of locks at Camelon, and, after it opened in 1822, it carried coal from the industrial heartland into Edinburgh. It was also used for recreational purposes, rowing races between Riccarton and Baberton being a favourite ploy.

Today Bridge Hub 8 based near Baberton is Scotland’s/Edinburgh's first canal based outdoor activity centre.
