The Baberton Mains Estate should probably be called Fernieflat Estate, since the majority of the houses were built on the fields of Fernieflat Farm. Only the western part was built on the fields of Baberton Mains Farm. The outlines of the 2 farms are shown on the map of the estate which also shows the location of the farm buildings at Fernieflat and Baberton Mains.

Outline of farm boundaries superimposed o a map of Baberton Fernieflat farm buildings stood where Baberton Mains Gardens is now.  Fernieflat farmhouse was demolished in 1971 but the cottages and byres, which clustered close by, stood a little longer.  The farmhouse was reached by a lane running west from the old Wester Hailes Road, just south of the railway line.  Baberton Mains farm buildings were converted into 7 separate houses, winning a Saltire Society Award for Reconstruction in 1975.
