  • Iron Age

    Somewhat to the west of Baberton Mains Farm is a feature which is the remains of a rectangular enclosure which was probably an Iron Age settlement, possibly Roman. There are several other Roman remains in the area, such as a signalling station on Torphin Hill, as well as another at Ravelrig, and a fort at Camilty along the Lang Whang. Within the same enclosure, there are later - medieval  remains of a farmstead, known as Currieheadrig. 

     

  • First written mention of Kilbaberton

    The first written mention of Kilbaberton is thought to have been in 1320 when the land was granted to Hugh Taylor. 
    1320 was the year in which Robert the Bruce declared Scotland’s status as an independent sovereign state.

  • John Christie buys Baberton Estate

    In the mid-eighteenth century, John Christie, an army captain, had been presented with a lottery ticket by his colonel, and by a stroke of unbelievable luck, he won the prize - £10,000. With this enormous sum, he bought the estate of Baberton.

  • The railway

    The Caledonian Railway was constructed around 1850 and carried, among other cargoes, shale waste into the city.

  • Robert Eaglesham buys Baberton Mains Farm

  • Wimpey buys building land

    Robert Russell who owned Ferniieflat Farm, sold 68 acres of land to George Wimpey in December 1971. The deed was registered in January 1972.

  • First House in Baberton Mains Drive is registered

    No 67 Baberton Mains Drive, the first house to be legally registered

  • Part of Baberton Mains Farm sold to Wimpey

    James Young sells part of Baberton Mains Farm to Wimpey

  • By-pass

    Baberton/Calder section of the Edinburgh City By-pass is completed

  • LRT No 33 Bus

    In 1987 the number 33 Bus began providing a public transport service within the estate. Initially, some residents objected because they thought it might be hazardous for children playing on the streets. However, this bus service is now invaluable, particularly for the elderly getting easier access to the shops.

  • Baberton Mains History Group award

    The Baberton Mains History Group were nominated for a Scottish Heritage Angels Award 2016 in the Investigating & Recording category. Although the group did not win the Category Award, they were given a commendation. The core group can be seen here enjoying themselves at the awards ceremony.
