Upper Spylaw Mill

Go down onto the old railway and turn left for 250 metres. Stop when you come to a house on your right. This is Upper Spylaw Mill which in 1682 was the fourth paper mill in Scotland. It paid its rent in reams of paper, a very precious commodity in those days due in great part to our proximity to Edinburgh. There, lawyers, schools and universities were all potential customers for paper. The mill was run by James Lithgow and later by his widow Isabel. Juniper Green has always had its capable women.
